I'm sure a lot of us are animal lovers so how about some shots of your PETS.

Guess I'll start...... These are our Akita's

In the foreground is Nakita. The big headed dude in the back is Dukurs, He left us about two years ago but we still miss him.

You make me want to go get a dog! Unfortunately, my daughter is alergic to animal dander.

    DUKURS Journey

This was a notice I had sent to friends to tell of our dog DUKURS passing back in 02/07. he was a wonderful dog that we still think of often and laugh about his odd ways, Debbie used to call him SlingBlade, if you saw the movie you might understand, he was very kind but could get riled up if the need arose.

I apologize if it seems a long post. But if you decide to read it through be sure you have some tissues handy.

Dukurs was our buddy, our protector, our dog.

Dukurs was an AKITA that we got from AKITA rescue. He must have been someone’s pet before he ended up at the puppy mill, because he was always well behaved and took readily to people. Not to keen about other dogs or any other animals for that matter, other than his companion Nakita. Weighing in at about 120 lbs he was a very impressive dog with a head that looked like a Bear. He came to our house about seven years ago after we had just lost our old Akita Suki. We had just got Nakita two weeks before and couldn’t turn him down when we met him, so now we had two Akita’s. He loved to take rides in the car and go on long walks when he was younger. As time went on he developed arthritis in his back and hips, and the walks became shorter. But anytime another dog came into sight he would puff himself up with his head and tail high and chest out and a bark you could hear forever echoing down the street, and his limp would magically disappear. HE was a very proud dog.

Well on Wednesday when I came home from work, he couldn’t get up. So I lifted him up to his feet and he hobbled on three legs to the door to go out. But at the end of the driveway I could see he was having problems and brought him back into the house. On Thursday we took him to the vet and x-rays showed he had a broken leg, the femur yet, he must have fallen in the house. Well it turns out he had osteosarcomaor bone cancer and the bone had fissures and was weakened so repair was out of the question. This left us with the indignity of amputation or euthanasia. Debbie found a poem that helped this decision I will add it

    A Pet's Prayer

If it should be, that I grow frail and weak

And pain should keep me from my peaceful sleep,

Then you must do what must be done

For this, the last battle, can't be won.

Don't let your grief stay your hand,

For this day more than the rest,

Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,

What is to come can hold no fears.

You'd not want me to suffer, so

When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,

Only, stay with me to the end

And hold me firm and speak to me

Until my eyes can no longer see.

I know in time you'll see,

it is a kindness that you do for me.

Although my tail, its last has waved,

From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Don't grieve, it should be you

Who must decide this thing to do.

We've been so close, we two, these years....

Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Smile, for we walked together for awhile.

So with this in mind we decided what was best for our friend Dukurs.

Since we couldn’t get the vet to come to the house and we didn’t want him to pass in a strange environment, we decided that because one of his favorite things was to ride in the car we asked the vet if she could perform the operation in the back of the Yukon, and they readily agreed.
When we got to the vet’s Dukurs wanted to stand up in the back of the car, so I helped him up. He was calm as the doctor shaved his front leg. He didn’t move as she put in the needle, and remained standing during the whole injection. He was very strong. The doctor had to prepare another needle and shaved his other leg. He remained standing. Only after the second injection did he decide to lay down. We continued to pet him and talk to him the entire time, and finally he picked his head up and looked over his shoulder at Debbie, as if to say goodbye, laid his head on his paws, and passed from this world.

    Rest in peace

We love you and miss you.

Yes he is and he serves no function in the family to carry his weight. My wife loves him and that means he is a keeper. I kind of partial to him also; OK a whole lot.

Thanks for sharing that Nitro, it really hit home. Ive had to bury 2 of my four legged friends so far and know the day will come that I will have to do it again. Unfortunately they are only with us for a short time, it sounds like Dukurs had a great life. Going threw it is a part of life and makes you appreciate them that much more while they are with us.

    Great thread idea - :rep:

Heres some pics of my labs, they are 2 yrs old now. Desmo is the black, Dici is the brown.
