Do you think it is better to have 30 round magazines of 5.56, or 20 round mags of 7.62? I don't think anyone would argue the superior performance of 7.62, the question is do you think the trade-off is worth it to have more ammo on you that weighs less with much less recoil, versus a harder hitting, longer range round that only takes a single hit to incapacitate.

I believe one well placed round is worth 10 mags of "spray and pray". Not that there isn't a correct time to do both <G>. For my part give me a good old 7.62 any day... they don't weigh THAT much more... and they aren't shrugged off easily.

Depends on the application, I think 5.56mm is great with Hornady TAP and other good JHP's and softpoints. I'd prefer a 6.8SPC for majority of applications though out to say 400-meters (much better terminal ballistics). Beyond that the 7.62mm for sure.

My friend was telling me today about his last shooting (South African Police Service) with armed suspects, having just committed a robbery that were fleeing the scene and shooting at Police, one of his rounds went througth the back of a VW Golf hitting the suspect sitting in the back right hand seat in the lower back, round exited out the bottom of his ass cheek literally blowing his right ass cheek clean off ("It just looked like it exploded right off" - in his words, which gives me the warm and fuzzies inside! *s*) from his issued R1/FN FAL 7.62mm with FMJ's (we're not supposed to use JHP's.... uhh... yah...). But I thought it was a good ending though, but the other suspects did escape on foot unfortunately. I'll try and get a pic of his issued rifle within the next week or so, just for shtfrbrains! :D

Dude I am a huge FAL fan. I have many, including a full-auto heavy barrel squad version. One of the greatest rifles ever made!

Many years ago I had a huge gun collection. Most of it I sold, but I kept what I considered irreplaceable. Full autos are absurdly expensive, and seem to go up in value without limit. It's too bad, because it puts them out of the price range of many great Americans.

Just yesterday I was looking at the prices of a gun I have always wanted, a British Sterling. $8000!! Great gun, but it's only stamped and rolled sheet metal, with minimal machining. There is nothing to a Sterling. In labor and materials it is probably worth about $250, but because of the Gun Control Act of 1986, there will never be any more imported for public sale. HK Mp-5's cost about $600, but to buy a transferable MP-5 could cost up to $20,000. It's just become too ridiculous for me.

I learn so much from you guys every day! I'm a midwesterner who grew up with only shotguns. Just got a springfield armory 1911 Loaded ultra carry(grew up in Geneseo, where they are made. Kinda). Now I cant get enough and love shooting targets at the farm. And just got a new huge state of the art shooting range just a couple miles from my house. Kinda expensive though. Thanks for all the info!

Glad to share information whenever possible. Don't hesitate to ask if you ever have any questions.

If you can shoot at your farm, just set up your own range.....

There are some great advantages to going to a nice indoor range; electric trollies for your targets, ammunition and targets available, climate control, gunsmith services, expert instruction to name a few, not to mention the social and networking factors. Free at the farm is great too when the weather is nice, especially if you have some friends over.

7.62 is by far the better round, for penetration, distance, knockdown power, blood loss. 5.56 is outdated, and those who have used it in a high stress combat situation will most likely tell you the 5.56 performed, but not the way 7.62 would have, especially when encountering barriers and body armor. Thus the resurgence of the M1A platform, and the SR25 project that continues to evolve.
Of course, I am speaking from a combat operational perspective, the 7.62 has application in CONUS urban situations as well, but the smaller 5.56, or 870 Police Magnum with TRUBALL 12gauge with flight control wad would be preferred due to over-penetration. I can do a lot more with 20 rounds of 7.62 Gold Medal Match than I could do with 30 rounds of M855 green tip 5.56. By the way, BETACO offers a 100 round beta c drum mag for the M1A for 7.62.

MotoX,
Only shotguns? If I were forced to only have one gun in my possession it would most definitely be a shotgun. Make mine a 12GA 3" Bennelli pump gun. Hand's down. I'm glad I don't have to make that choice, hope it never comes to it.

Watch your vote then reddog... and the vote of your Congressman. It's starting to freak me out!

BTW... Have you ever shot a Judge... little 4-shot 410 pistol? I think we need one of those to go with our Bennellis - they kick ass and don't care about names <G>.

Sage advice, Falcon. Haven't missed a vote since 1970 Brother and I'm not too bashful about letting my congress critters know what we think. I know far too many people who never cast a ballot. What a shame.
