Stock brakes question

I have a 2013 on order and I'm starting to plan and budget for upgrades. I've owned tons of trucks over the years and we currently have a Denali XL that my daughter drives so I am familiar with large vehicles. The Raptor will be my daily driver (3 mile commute) and I will be coming from a BMW 7 series. One of my biggest concerns in going from the BMW to a Raptor is braking. I love the brake feel and bite that my BMW has as well as the stopping distance. I also understand that braking performance has tons to do with tires.

My question, if you brake hard with stock tires and brakes on pavement does the ABS engage? If yes that suggests that the tires on pavement are the weak link for stop times. If the ABS doesn't engage on dry pavement I'll try a pad compound change. The pads on the BMW offer fantastic braking performance at the tradeoff of wear and MASSIVE amounts of brake dust.

I am convinced I'll get the stainless line upgrade just to improve brake feel.

The stock tires will not activate the ABS on dry pavement.
I have actully done brake tests on the truck...200' is the the distance rating from 70 mph...
With a set of Grabbers (35x12.5x18) on the truck I got it down to 190'. No abs yet
After putting on a set Art Rotors and Posi pads from SDHQ . The truck is putting you on the seat belt in 175'+...ABS is smacking very slightly...
I have SS lines on also but that is just for feel..They will not effect distance as you stated.

With the rotors and pads are you getting any brake noise or chatter? How are the brakes in a hard stop when cold. OEM brakes tend to focus on stop performance when cold, noise, and life. I don't care much about life but I don't want to sacrifice performance when cold and I don't want squealing brakes.

 The stock brakes are the best truck brakes I have ever owned. I have only engaged the ABS a handful of times. They do a decent job stopping this 6,000+ lbs beast.

good to hear the brakes are good. But let me explain further. With less tire traction the current brakes can lock up the wheel which activates the ABS to prevent lockup. With good enough tire traction the current brakes would not have enough force to activate the ABS. If the current brakes will not activate the ABS in a panic stop on dry pavement, then the tires have more traction than the braking power of the system. If this is true than stronger brakes would let you stop faster. If the ABS activates with stock brakes on dry pavement then the tires are the weak link and bigger brakes won't stop you faster with stock tires. Bigger brakes would stay cooler and prevent brake fade which is a differnet aspect of braking

No noise or chatter even when cold...The peddle may be slightly stiff for the first 2 or 3 heat cycles when dead cold..Or it just could be my old leg needs warming up..LOL....
All in all I'm very happy with the upgrade especially for the price..

I've never had a problem with my stock brakes, but mind you I've had the stainless brake lines on for the last 2 years. I have had the rotors resurfaced once because I tow a lot in the mountains and that I consider normal for the overweight conditions I put the truck through :)

The only downsides I have personally seen on the Raptors is the soft rubber brake lines which swell under extreme braking situations causing a soft feeling peddle and less than adequate surface contact between the pad and rotor. We replace these with stainless steel brake lines that are specifically designed for the Raptor. If you are looking to further upgrade the braking system on the Raptor I would highly recommend the EBC rotor and pad combination. There is much more bite force on the EBC set-up along with a more aggressive braking compound.

Check out our braking upgrade section on our website for the Raptor.

Also, I noticed you are in Arizona, feel free to swing by the shop and check out some of the other Raptor goodies we have!

I pulled these pictures from Black Hawk's build thread as he has a very comprehensive write up on the brake upgrade I am referring to.

That's a lot more meat making contact on the rotor right there! definitely going that route on my next brake job.
